Lets face it, consistency is not the most exciting personality trait, but all successful people have it. Michael Schumacher did not become the most successful Formula 1 driver by accident, he consistently drove for hours and hours on the practice track, honing his skills. He didn't just throw a few laps in on a Monday, before having the rest of the week off. The majority of high achievers will attribute their success to hard work and being consistent, in other words working consistently on a daily basis and never giving up.
Many people will go on a diet or start a weight loss program, only to eventually give up because they did not see the progress or get the results they desired. In a lot of cases they simply weren't consistent enough, and as a result got the rewards they deserved. Healthy eating or regular exercise are not things you just practice through the week (or when you feel like it) and forget about all weekend. You have to become consistent in your weight loss efforts, in order to reap the rewards you crave. But how do we develop successful weight loss habits such as consistency?
Being consistent with your weight loss efforts is not all about eating and doing all the same things in robotic fashion day after day. It is however about being prepared, sensible, exercising control and making healthy choices as well as putting real effort and hard work in. If you eat a healthy balanced diet from Monday to Friday, but then totally blowing out over the weekend because you believe you deserve a reward for all your hard effort, then it is not going to happen for you.
Lets look at ways you can become more consistent with your weight loss efforts.
1. Plan Meals In Advance
Put some thought into your next shopping trip, buy more fresh wholesome produce and less processed foods and unhealthy snacks. Plan out your meals for the week ahead and allow for the odd treat meal (in moderation). Sticking to a healthy well thought out eating plan will give you more control over your daily calorie intake.
2. Exercise Portion Control
One of the reasons you are overweight is probably down to the amount you eat. Start eating smaller more sensible portions at every meal. If you are consistent with your portion sizes then you are going to be cutting plenty of calories from your diet. Your meal should provide enough food to leave you content, but not bloated or stuffed.
3. Take REGULAR Exercise
When it comes to exercise, consistency is key to your success. The only way that you will develop a successful exercise habit, is through regular consistent exercise. Aim to do at least 3-4 sessions of cardio exercise a week, consisting of at least 30 minutes each. Even on rest days, get in the habit of being more active. Walk instead of using the car, take the stairs rather than the lift and instead of watching a film, do something active with the kids.
4. Don't Let A Slip Up Affect You
We are all human and there will be times when we suffer a setback. Having the odd slip up is not important, but what you learn and do after it is. Just get back to your healthy habits as soon as possible and don't use it as an excuse to give up.
Developing successful weight loss habits is all about being consistent on a daily basis. If you can master consistency, then you will achieve your weight loss goals
